Prayer – Talking with God
Prayer, when defined in its simplest terms, is the act of ‘Communicating with God’ and it is the sincerity and the quality of our Prayers that help determine the degree of human and spiritual intimacy we have with our Holy Father. Saint John Vianney tells us “Prayer is the inner bath of love into which the soul plunges itself.”
Since the dawn of civilisation people from all walks of life have chosen to plunge themselves into this ‘bath of love’ and through Prayer, unite themselves with God in an eternal bond of love and communion.
By valuing what the Saints of previous ages endeavor to teach us about Prayer, we are able to enter into a deeper understanding of the spirit and power of Prayer.
- Saint Josemaria Escriva tells us in his famous quote: “To pray is to talk with God, but about what? About Him, about yourself; joys, sorrows, successes and failures, noble ambitions, daily worries, weaknesses! And acts of thanksgiving and petitions: and Love and reparation. In a word: to get to know Him and to get to know yourself: to get acquainted!”
- Saint Faustina further enlightens us in her quote: “A soul arms itself by Prayer for all kinds of combat. In whatever state the soul may be, it ought to Pray. A soul which is pure and beautiful must Pray, or else it will lose its beauty; a soul which is striving after this purity must Pray, or else it will never attain it; a soul which is newly converted must Pray, or else it will fall again; a sinful soul, plunged in sins, must Pray so that it might rise again. There is no soul which is not bound to Pray, for every single grace comes to the soul through Prayer.
- Saint John Vianney reiterates in his beautiful quote: “My little children, your hearts, are small, but Prayer stretches them and makes them capable of loving God. Through Prayer we receive a foretaste of Heaven and something of Paradise comes down upon us. Prayer never leaves us without sweetness. It is honey that flows into the souls and makes all things sweet. When we Pray properly, sorrows disappear like snow before the sun.”
The Holy Rosary – The Greatest Form of Prayer
The Holy Rosary is at the very center of Christian spirituality and is one of the finest and most praiseworthy traditions of Christian contemplation and Prayer. The Rosary (from the Latin term ‘rosarium’ meaning ‘garland of roses’ or ‘rose garden’) is a sequential method of Prayer that invokes the intercessory powers of the Beloved Virgin Mary to enhance and focus our Prayers to our Lord Jesus Christ and the Holy Father.
Again we can look to the guidance of so many of the wonderful Saints, Popes and other Servants of God who have accentuated the reflective and contemplative aspects of Praying the Holy Rosary and have passed down detailed instruction on how the Rosary should be prayed, in particular the necessity for focus, adoration, reverence and sincerity of intention during Rosary declarations and meditations.
“The greatest method of praying is the Rosary.” –
But can the Rosary really make that much of an impact? Is it really the greatest method of praying like Saint Francis and so many others believe? For so long and for so many, the loving spiritual connection that comes of Praying the Rosary has become one of the most significant and beautiful aspects of their lives.
“The Rosary is the most excellent form of prayer and the most efficacious means of attaining eternal life. It is the remedy for all our evils, the root of all our blessings. There is no more excellent way of praying.” –
A commitment to praying the Holy rosary is not just simply a matter of repeating ‘Hail Marys’ and ‘Our Fathers’. It is about learning and meditating on the life, death and resurrection of Jesus, as it occurred through the eyes of his Mother. It is not possible to properly emulate the virtues of Jesus without knowing or contemplating them, so who better to teach us than his Mother, The Blessed Mary, who is known as the perfect disciple.
The mysteries that we are called upon to contemplate within the Rosary, will guide us to a deeper and more intimate understanding of the virtues of our Lord!
