The Promises of Mary

Through the ages and by various sources our Beloved Mary has made known to us the graces she bestows upon those who pray the Prayers of the Holy Rosary. These graces are known as the 15 promises of Mary.

  1. To those who shall devoutly and sincerely recite my Rosary, shall they receive signal graces.
Signal graces are considered to be those special and unique graces that help to sanctify us during our earthly state of life.
  2. To all whom shall faithfully recite my Rosary, I promise my special protection and the greatest of all graces.
Our Beloved Mary is our Advocate and a channel that enables the Graces of God to reach us more readily. In this first promise Our Lady is emphasising that She will watch over those who pray the Rosary.
  3. My Rosary shall be an armor against hell and will destroy vice, while granting deliverance from sin and dispersing heresy.
This second promise, as with the third, is to remind us, how earnest prayer through the Rosary, is invaluable to us if we are to advance in holy virtues by overcoming sin. Advancement in holy virtues necessitates a reduction in the committing of sin and and a refusal to yield to vice and heresy.
  4. My Rosary creates virtue and causes good works to flourish, it will obtain for those souls an abundance of divine mercy and it will remove from the hearts of men their love of the material world and their vanity, replacing instead a desire of things eternal. Oh, that more souls would only sanctify themselves by this means!
This promise, as with the previous one, promises to help those who pray the Rosary to live more virtuously. The avoidance of sin also helps us to increase in virtue and to become more holy.
  5. Those whose soul shall recommend itself through reciting my Rosary shall not perish.
As Our Blessed Lady is our spiritual Mother and champion, She will ever assist those who call upon Her unreservedly through the Rosary. The Church helps to remember this through the words of the Memorare prayer. (“… never was it known that anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help or sought your intercession, was left unaided …”)
  6. Whosoever would recite my Rosary with piety and give great consideration to its sacred mysteries, shall not be overcome by misfortune nor perish by an unprovided death. The sinner will see conversion and should they be just, they shall remain in the grace of God, and be meritorious of eternal life.
This sixth promise gives focus to the degree and significance of the graces the Rosary brings upon those who pray through it. The mercy of God shall be greater than his justice and all will be granted a final opportunity for repentance. (see also promise number seven). To not be overcome by misfortune refers to the abundance of graces that will be obtained by Our Lady, on behalf of that person, in order that they can withstand such misfortune. “For my yoke is sweet and my burden light.” (Matthew 11:30)
  7. Whosoever shall carry true devotion for my Rosary shall not die without the consolations or sacraments of the Church.
This seventh promise of Our Lady gives focus to the great benefits received at the time of death by those who have given devotion to the Rosary. Through the Sacraments of the Eucharist, Confession and Anointing of the Sick, salvation for the faithful is ensured.
  8. Those of dedication for my Rosary shall find the light of God through their life and when they meet death. At this moment of death they shall have the plenteousness of His grace and be participants in the merits of the Paradise Saints.
Our Beloved Lady, in this promise, reiterates the graces bestowed by God upon those who pray the Holy Rosary. This light of God gives great assistance throughout their lives and at the time of their death.
  9. Whose souls are devoted to my Rosary I will deliver promptly from Purgatory.
Those who have given sincere devotion to Mary and the Rosary but still require a period of cleansing in Purgatory can be comforted by the knowledge that Our Lady will make a special effort to secure their prompt release through Her intercessory powers.
  10. Those children of faith to my Rosary, will rejoice in Heaven with great glory.
This tenth promise of Our Lady is related to promises three and four as those who devote themselves to an enriched Holy lifestyle during their time on earth, will gain for themselves an elevated position in Heaven. The closer an individual becomes to God during their time on earth, the closer that person is to God in Heaven. A Catholic Church Catechism states “Spiritual progress tends toward ever more union with Christ.”
  11. Whatsoever should be asked of with sincerity through my Rosary, shall be done.
This promise focuses the role Our Lady plays as both our Advocate and Mediatrix of Graces. Understandably, the response to all such prayer requests must be in accordance with the perfect will of the Holy Father, but should a request be of benefit to the soul, then Our Lady will intercede on our behalf.
  12. Whosoever shall bring forth my Holy Rosary shall be aided in their necessities.
When someone advocates the prayers of the Holy Rosary, our Beloved Lady accentuates Her maternalistic love for us by securing for our benefit, many spiritual benefactions and nonspiritual (earthly) needs, provided these graces are within the will of our Heavenly Father.
  13. I have obtained from my Divine Son for all who would advocate my Rosary, the intercession of the entire Celestial Court throughout their lives and at the moment of death.
As our Beloved Lady is our defender, She delivers to us throughout our earthly life and also at the time of our death, added support from all the Saints in Heaven (the Communion of Saints). Please refer to paragraphs 954 to 959 in the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
  14. Whosoever would recite my Rosary in faith would all be my beloved children, brothers and sisters of my first son Jesus Christ.
Considering that the Holy Rosary is an exceptional form of prayer concentrating upon Jesus and His teachings, particularly in reference to salvation, it cannot fail to bring us closer to both Our Lord and Our Lady. From a doctrinal point of view, Our Beloved Lady is our spiritual Mother and Jesus is our elder Brother, and our Lord.
  15. Being of devotion to my Rosary is a special sign of Predestination.
In this the fifteenth of Mary’s promises the term Predestination is a reference to Our Heavenly Father having preordained the salvation of those who have given devotion to the praying of the Holy Rosary. Whilst the absolute assurance of salvation for any individual can only be known if the Holy Father has directly made it known to that person, the rest of us can feel secure in the knowledge that we travel the correct path when we pray the Holy Rosary and carry with us an abundance of Graces to live a Holy life and assure our arrival at our Heavenly destination. (For a greater theological explanation please reference the Catechism of the Catholic Church paragraphs 381, 488, 600, and 2782 and Summa Theologica Question 23)
